Good People, our new favourite Instagram account is run by the artist Maria Qamar, who uses Pop Art to paint satires of ‘Desi culture’ (Desi means a person of Indian, Pakistani or Bangladeshi origin who lives abroad).
Much of her art is specific to her Desi identity, but the depiction of a young woman growing up with urban and Western influences that sometimes conflict with parental desires and cultural traditions rings true for young Nairobians, too.
Qamar’s work also deals with cultural appropriation and the many forms it takes.
