White actors have been cast as leads in film over every other race for years. This often leads other races being type cast as the black best friend, spicy latino, or the socially awkward asian. Many people, like Noemia Oliveira and Orlando Caldera, have grown tired of the lack of representation, leading them to create Projeto Identidade.
The project, though up by Brazilian creatives takes on the stereotypical roles we’re used to seeing in movies. Projecto Identidade is an on-going representation projects that reimagines all white roles, and depicts them using people of colour.
All of this comes after Zendaya, a black TV actor, was cast as Peter Parker’s high school sweetheart Mary Jane in the Spiderman reboot. Although there is no mention of Mary Jane being white in the books, in the cinematic depictions she has always been cast as a white woman. Instead of seeing this as a huge step for black actors, critics took to the web to show their bigoted anger.
Perhaps with the contribution of Projecto Identidade we can give more exposure to the close-minded, and revel in the beauty of these reimagined characters.
